Addict

I have a confession.  I am an addict.  My name is Kathleen and I am addicted to writing books.  Not writing books, but reading books about writing. I could spend my whole life reading books about what I would love to do, and never pick up my pen. I checked out a book yesterday called The Writer's Little Helper by James V. Smith. It is phenomenal. I read almost the whole book last night in one sitting.  I learned so much and was so inspired.  I could hardly sleep.  So I am ready to attack my manuscript with reckless abandon.... just as soon as I finish reading the book and taking notes on all of the good stuff.

I know what you mean. And I must write, everything depends on it.

Can I share a little something though ~K, I learned more doing NaNo than from all the books I had read while agonizing about just starting any thing at any point.

And I am also starting to limit the number of blogs about writing that I read as well.

I agree, I learned (and acomplished) way more doing NaNo than anything else. Before I read NPNP I had never written anything more than a journal entry. Now I have 2 completed and 1 incomplete manuscript and a screenplay! But I still love reading books about writing! The good thing about this last one, is that it actually inspired me to work on my MS. I read the whole thing and outlined it onto index cards yesteray. That is huge progress for me. SO I guess the addiction is not all bad.

Hmmmm... I don't read any blogs about writing... maybe I better not even go there!
Thanks for sharing, I'm glad I'm not alone!

I had the same addiction. When I first started writing (er reading about writing and dreaming I was actually doing it) I would read voraciously about the writing process. Then I began to notice that the information in these self-help books for fledgling (read struggling wannabe) writers like me was virtually the same, regurgitated stuff with a different byline. So, I started to write.

Now I have two faves that I have picked up over the course of my career that I read when I need a boost, though I question the reasoning behind perusing one of them. I think I do it because it is just so damn funny. It reminds me of MR's rantings and is quite contradictory to the rest of the writing advice out there. That's the one I really take to heart.

Congrats on finding the book that motivates you. It's a little like winning the lottery! Have fun with the editing~ Lex
